This series captures my interpretation of “Home.” I grew up on my family’s farm, where this barn was built in 1907 and still stands today. The images of the barn are screen-printed, and the background elements were soft-cut printed based on the plate pattern used in my home growing up, which I strongly associate with love and care. I explored the combination of these elements in this series.
The first composition is representative of the past, using a screen-printed image of the barn from around a hundred years ago. This structure represents the hard work and livelihood of those who came before us. The background’s repetitive pattern mirrors the cycles and seasonality of caring for a farm. The concentric circles represent the knowledge and wisdom gathered over time, through experience, and passed through generations.
The second composition represents the present, using a screen-printed image of the barn in its current form. The size and structure have changed over the years of use and necessity, yet the bones and strength are steadfast. The segmented background represents the many decades that have passed, and the lessons learned along the way pieced together from older to younger generations.
The final composition represents the unification and strength that comes through living in the present while acknowledging the wisdom of time, combining the past and the present.
